Methodology

How the estimate is calculated

The data is real. We use the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 edition (retrieved 2026-09-11): United States, national, all industries, USD per year. For each of the 48 occupations in the tool we publish the BLS 25th percentile, median, and 75th percentile — unchanged.

The experience mapping is our model. BLS does not publish wages by years of experience, so we place your estimate inside the published band: 0–2 years maps to the 25th percentile, 6–10 years to the median, 15+ years to the 75th percentile, with the in-between bands at the midpoints. This is a reasonable, disclosed approximation — not BLS data.

What it doesn't cover. City and state differences, industry premiums, company size, and individual negotiation all move real offers outside this band. Treat the result as a starting point for research, not a salary demand.

FAQ

Salary estimator questions

Where does the salary data come from?
Every figure comes from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics, May 2025 edition — the U.S. government's official survey of employer-reported wages across all industries. We publish the 25th percentile, median, and 75th percentile annual wages for each occupation, exactly as BLS reports them.
How accurate is the salary estimate?
It is an estimate, not a quote. BLS percentiles describe what U.S. workers in an occupation actually earn nationally; your pay will vary by employer, city, industry, and negotiation. We map your experience to a point inside the BLS 25th–75th percentile band and label the method openly — see the methodology section below.
Does the estimator account for my city or state?
Not yet. This version uses U.S. national figures so every number is backed by published BLS data. State and metro breakdowns are on our roadmap — we will only add them when we can source them as rigorously.
Is the salary estimator really free?
Yes. No account, no credit card, no email required. If the estimate makes you curious what roles you could target next, our free career report goes deeper.
